Re: Poona figs

Dear sir,
- Puneri anjir and dinkar are the popular varieties of fig and recommended particularly for maharashtra region.
- Among those seedlings of dinkar are available with us. our address is
Training organiser
krishi vigyan kendra
malegaon colony, shardanagar,
baramati.dist.- pune 413115
ph.no. 02112-255207,255227
- A variety puneri anjir is also available with most of private nursieries of pune district mainly in saswad taluka.
- As far as climate is concerned fig requires dry and hot climate. In humid climate it does't grow well. Because humidity affects on its growth, flowering, fruit setting etc. Fig can withstand very high upto 44 c and very low upto 4 c temperature. so it is better to you to choose a location with particularly dry climate.

Re: Poona figs

- Climate has an important bearing on size, shape and colour of skin and pulp. A relatively cool climate stimulates production of larger and elongated fruits. Climatic conditions during fruit development considerably influence the fruit quality. Very high temperatures (> 39?C) induce premature fruit ripening. High humidity results in fruit splitting, while hot breeze during ripening leads to sweet but small fruits.

- Medium to heavy, calcareous well-drained, deep (about 1m) soil having pH of 7-8 is ideally suited for fig cultivation. Although it does well even on light sandy, shallow soils, deep soils encourage better root establishment. The fruits produced on fertile, light soils are better suited for drying. The crop can tolerate drought, salts (chlorides and sulphates) but is sensitive to sodium carbonate and boron salts. In general, climate rather than soil is a limiting factor for its cultivation.
- As far as nutrient requirements is concerned you have to provide the nutrients as per the soil test values. In general it is recommended to use 40-50 kgs of FYM, 1.3 kgs of urea,2 kg single super phosphate and 1/2 kg of muriate of potash to 5-6 years old tree.
- Harvest 25-30 kg fruits from one tree when crop attains 4-5 years old age which comes around 10-12 thousand kg per hectare area. Maintain no. of fruits on the basis of these values and as per your experience.
- Carry out harvesting when fruits those seems somewhat unriped, as fully riped fruits damages during packaging and transportation.
-Peak water requirement of fig is about 100 - 120 liters per day per tree.
- Subsidies for the plantation of fruits have given by government under NHB and NHB. Please get in touch with the agricultural officer of your tahsil to get the detail information.
