Teak Saplings Suppliers

Dear Experts, have 25acres(on a long lease of 99yrs) of land which is unsuitable for mango.Due to high percentage of silica in soil .Have been advised to go for teak and cashew plantation. If i opt for teak(525 saplings for an acre),should i plant Plant Tissue culture(PTC) teak sapling or Nilambadur stumps,or seelings of nilambadur.Which will give best quality teak in the end.

PTC will mature in 14-15(as per Biotec Lab suppliers) years and other options will take 25+ years.

Kindly also provide details of PTC proucers in maharashtra.

What would be best intercrop?a friend has suggested sandalwood.

Thanking you.Raj

Re: Teak Saplings Suppliers

The growth rate of the Tissue culture teak is 10 to 12' per year. The root/stump also grow very rapidly like TC teak i.e 8 to 10'per year. But in TC teak plantations 90% uniform growth will be there compaired to stump plantation there very less uniform plantation.

The salient features of the Tissue culture Teak are -
Rapid growth, the cultivation period is less than root/stump plants,
The setting of the heartwood is morethan 70% in tissue culture but in roots/stumps plantinng is less than 30% .
In tissue culture teak trees are mostly very straight with less side branchs can removed easily or its can be automaticaly worn out without any wound and hole.but it will not possible in roots/stumps teak trees.
The root/stumps teak trees mostly will not grow straightly. The side branches are more in stump teak trees looks like neem tree.

For availability of teak saplings better to approach nearest forest department office in your region.

Fruit/spice/medicinal trees also can be successfully intercropped with teak throughout its growth. Additionally, inclusion of nitrogen fixing trees such as Gliricidia or subabul either in alternate rows or every third row not only improves teak growth but also saves chemical nitrogenous fertilizers. However, manage (by lopping or pruning) the nitrogen fixing tree component in such a way that it does not compete with teak for light.
