Re: polly house cultivation

The poly house cultivation is beneficial only when off-season flowers, vegetables are grown. It is also useful in production of vegetable nursery under adverse weather conditions. The choice of crops depends upon the size of the poly house structure, market demand as well as the expected market price.

While it is convenient to raise any vegetable crop in environmentally-controlled poly house during any part of the year, the selection of crops is more critical in case of ordinary low-cost poly houses. In subtropics, cucumber, bottle gourd, capsicum and tomato give quite remunerative yields during winter in low-cost poly houses. With proper ventilation cabbage, early varieties of tropical cauliflower and coriander can be successfully grown during summer/rainy season also.
The flower crops like gerbera, carnation, rose, anthurium etc are also taken in poly house.

Points to be considered before starting protected cultivation:
1. Initially you have to complete a short duration course of protected cultivation. Also visit any successful farmer of protected cultivation.
2. The site should be away from the industrial area to avoid pollution injury to the crop plants.
3. Shade due to any building or trees is also harmful. Ground slope should be such that surface water is directed away from the greenhouse. Even if the greenhouse is at higher ground level, the stagnating water around it may saturate the soil through seepage, hence proper drainage provision is essential.
4. Location with respect to all weather road facilitates the construction of the greenhouse and allows prompt disposal of the produce. Nearness to the cities, safeguards the market interest. However, a poly house meant primarily for seedling production may be located away from the cities.
5. A dependable water supply has to be maintained for all categories of poly houses, having environmental control equipments or not.
6. Besides, electrical supply is also essential.
7. A east-west orientation of the poly house ensures good winter light and protection from northern winds.
8. Availability of sufficient labour facility is necessary.

If you are new in this field please get trained before entering in the field of poly house cultivation of the crops. Visit some of the poly houses near to you. For availability of training in your region you may approach to Agriculture officer of tahsil or nearest Krishi Vigyan kendra or Agriculture university.
